Composting with chickens

Why not let the girls (and can’t forget the roosters) work all while cutting your composting time in half. While also letting them find some treats while they’re at it.

I spent some time last year debating on this. In the end I’m so happy I did.

Another perk is that if you’re worried about the smell and you already have the chickens then why not keep it all together?

This costs us $0 using some hardware we already had and some skids my husband and I collected.

6 skids pieced together in the photo below. We did add some 2x4s that we had laying around at the bottom to help prevent the chickens from scratching it outside of the pile.

1 thing I would like to add is some chicken wire to the bottom to prevent excess from seeping through the cracks of the skids. I’ll do this eventually once this most recent pile is ready for my garden beds.

The Brick Path

Brick Walkway / Repurposed Bricks   Before the mud trail returned from the dogs that they form over winter / beginning of spring I had to find a solution. When we bought the cabin we came across a skid load of bricks in one of the existing buildings. So what better way to repurpose them then to make a brick path. My mud trail problem was solved and the look it brought was even better than imagined and added bonus I have more spots to put for plants. First - I dug out the path. About 2 inches of dirt to help prevent weeds and this also helped with making sure they were all level with each other. My 3 year old loved helping me with this part. I was able to utilize the extra dirt in other places around the yard so another added bonus.  Second -  Lay material down (tarp, boxes, or whatever material you choose to use) to help prevent the weeds from coming up under the bricks. Third -Pick the layout of your bricks. I laid them all the same direction and went with a slight angle...
